It was clear to everyone watching last night’s fight that Manny Pacquiao beat Timothy Bradley. All of the rounds went to Pacquaio except one according to FOX Sports coverage. The Associated Press had Pacquaio winning 117-111. Pacquaio clearly landed more punches. Bradley landed 159 punches and Pacquaio had 253. It seemed so decided that people started to leave the bar before the decision was announced. The camera panned to Bradley’s wife who was almost in tears. No one was happy that Pacquaio had won but it seemed fair. Then everything changed the announcer came on declared that Bradley was the winner. In a split decision two judges picked Bradley. And with that people started to mourn the loss of boxing as a real sport. It went just like this:
SHOCK: What? Are you f****** kidding?
DENIAL: This is totally rigged. That’s why they already set-up a rematch in November.
ANGER: I’m never watching boxing again. This is bullshit. One of the judges never even judged a match before.
BARGAINING: Can they overturn this decision? I mean they can watch the tapes?
DEPRESSION: That fight was terrible. There is no point of watching boxing unless Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather fight.
I think we all knew that boxing had given way to capitalism. It was no longer about the quality of the fighter but his ability to gain the media’s attention. Skill doesn’t sell tickets to fights but hype does. Bradley is the perfect example of this. He has been a champion fighter since 2008 but no one knew him. That’s because Bradley doesn’t sell himself as a villain like Mayweather. He doesn’t say crazy things just get more tickets sold, he just fights. And man it would have been nice to see him win on his own merits instead of becoming the pawn of the boxing machine. Now who wants tickets for the rematch?
