NBA Draft Recap

28 Jun

The NBA Draft which was held in New Jersey, not sure why they couldn’t be classy like the NFL and have it at Radio City Music Hall. It feels like a college graduation except instead of useless diploma they are handed contracts for thousands of dollars. As you can imagine it is a very emotional event for the players. For the attendees it is a chance to get drunk and boo David Stern which may of them did. Luckily for Stern many years of denial have turned boos into cheers in his mind.

As we speak the draft is still going on but let’s face it only the first 15-20 really matter. After that it becomes what’s his name, where’s he from, and he’s be warming the bench. The big winner of tonight’s draft was of course New Orleans Hornets. The Hornets which amazingly lucked out on getting the first pick took home Kentucky’s Anthony Davis. Luckily I only mock draft for the number 1 pick so I was good.

Here are the picks and my reaction(which you could see first hand if you follow us on Twitter)

1. Anthony Davis (Kentucky) going to New Orleans Hornets. We learned tonight that Davis has trademarked his unibrow which means sadly he will never shave it. I am not sure how exactly you trademark facial hair? Does that mean that James Harden’s beard is trademarked to?

2. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (Kentucky) going to Charlotte Bobcats. Kidd-Gilchrist is amazing athlete but let’s face it he’s no Davis. So don’t see much changing for the Bobcats. At least they can’t get any worse.

3. Bradley Beal (Florida) going to Washington Wizards. He apparently has a lot of high character which I think ESPN speak for he is not a thug.

4. Dion Waiters (Syracuse) going to Cleveland Cavaliers. Kyrie Irving should be happy that they got a good player. He’s needed some support for awhile now.

5. Thomas Robinson (Kansas) going to Sacramento Kings. Was really surprised Robinson didn’t go sooner in the draft. He is an amazing player and I think the nicest guy ever. He is helping to take care of his family after his mother’s death. The reporter interviewed his sister after the pick was made and told her that she was moving near Disneyland. Umm yeah Sacramento is kind of far from Disneyland. Too bad David Stern put ax on the Kings moving to the OC, she could have lived in Disneyland.

6. Damian Lillard (Weber) going to Portland Trail Blazers. So still not sure where Weber is or who Lillard is?

7. Harrison Barnes (UNC) going to Golden State Warriors. This is a may be the bright spot on Warriors’ fans day . . . it might just make you forget your coach hooked up with a stripper.

8. Terrence Ross (Washingon) going to the Toronto Raptors. This guy actually didn’t look sad about being drafted to the Raptors. I feel like being drafted to the Raptors is like saying, “You won’t make any real money unless you get good and they trade you or you become a free agent.”

9. Andre Drummond (Connecticut) going to the Detroit Pistons. I honestly forgot about the Pistons.

10. Austin Rivers (Duke) going to the New Orleans Hornets. So yeah now the Hornets might actually have a chance to be a good team. Feels a little like the Oklahoma City Thunder, a lot of young talent.

Extorting a Minister

28 Jun

You have to get to a pretty bad place in your life when you are willing to extort a minister. Yes you heard correctly Warrior’s coach Mark Jackson is also an ordained minister. He runs a church with his wife. Six years ago he had an affair with a stripper, Alexis Adams. I guess Adams wasn’t doing too good since retiring from stripping so she decided to blackmail Jackson using nude photographs she had of him. Again men if you are going to have an affair don’t take photos. Helping Adams was a guy named Marcus Shaw who approached Jackson at a hotel on April 3 asking for money to conceal the photos. Like any normal person would do he paid the guy. But Shaw and Adams got greedy and keep asking for more and more money.

They should have just taken the money and been happy because now they are looking at felony charges. I think people forget that extortion is illegal. Don’t worry Jackson became a minister after the affair so it’s all good. Because as we know Christianity cures all desires for strippers.

And 1st Pick Goes To . . .

30 May

The Draft Lottery is actually kind of a sad event to watch. It is literally the worst 14 teams in the NBA waiting to see if they will get first picking of the young college stars. So basically if you are Anthony Davis (the likely number 1 pick) you are sitting there waiting to find out which shitty team you will be playing for next year. Maybe that’s why Davis was sporting a white t-shirt and baseball cap rather than a suit. It is also funny that they try to drag out this less than 10 minute ceremony into a half hour. The best part about watching the Lottery is getting a reminder of the teams you forgot existed like the Toronto Raptors.Yes there is still an NBA team in Canada.

Here are the winners of the draft or losers depending on how you look at it:

1. New Orleans Hornets- This was actually an upset since everyone thought it would be the Charlotte Bobcats. Now this is the team that will most likely snag Anthony Davis. Kind of suspicious that New Orleans won and David Stern (Commissioner of the NBA)  owned them up until recently.

2. Charlotte Bob Cats- So sad for Michael Jordon. The Bob Cats could have really used Davis.

3. Washington Wizards

4. Cleveland Cavaliers

Gold Digging Reversed

30 May

VH1′s “Basketball Wives” or as I call it “Anyone Whoever Hooked Up With or Briefly Dated a Basketball Player” just returned for another season on May 28th and the drama has already started. Newcomer Kenya Bell is being sued by her estranged husband Charlie Bell for spousal support. The two filed for divorce in March. Apparently things haven’t been going so good for Charlie since he was dropped from the Golden State Warriors. He is now playing in an Italian basketball league where he earns $100,000 a year. Charlie thinks he can’t possibly live on $100,000 a year so he wants Kenya to pony up her new reality money.

In May Kenya was arrested for attacking Charlie with a box cutter in front of their kids. You would think Charlie would have learned from that not to mess with her. Now Kenya is trying to get a piece of Charlie’s 4 miliion dollar savings account.

Oh the drama . . . it just leads me back to my original thought is anyone on “Basketball Wives” actually still married to a basketball player. They should really rename the show.

Trading Players Takes a Toll

20 Mar

When you own a NBA team trading players is all business but to the fans it’s a matter of the heart. That’s what Golden State Warrior’s owner Joe Lacob found out when he was booed for whooping 90 seconds during Chris Mullin’s jersey retirement ceremony. The fans were upset about the trade of leading scorer Monta Ellis to the Bucks. You can’t really blame the fans since Ellis helped lead the Bucks to a victory over the Warriors on Saturday.

Ellis was traded for Buck’s center Andrew Bogut who fractured his ankle in February. When Bogut is healthy he is one of the best centers in the NBA but he has had a lot of injuries. For fans it was a risky trade of a healthy scorer to gamble on a sometimes healthy center. It is unclear whether Bogut will even be able to play this season for the Warriors. The Warrior’s are also missing Stephen Curry due to ankle injuries. It has been speculated that the Warriors will keep both Curry and Bogut out for the rest of the season to improve their draft lottery chances. Lacob maybe doing the best thing for the Warriors come next season or he could be seriously screwing them. With Bogut’s past injury record it would not be shocking if he is injured again.

Although I agree with Mullin’s who came to the rescue of Lacob by calling the booing fans “classless.” I think it team owners need to know how their decisions affect the fans. Let’s face it a team is nothing without it’s fans.
