NFL Rundown Week 6: Did Anyone See That Coming?

15 Oct

This week shit went crazy in the NFL and their were surprises everywhere. The Miami Dolphins refused to quit and beat the St. Louis Rams, 17-14. The Cleveland Browns climbed out of their hole to beat the Cincinnati Bengals, 43-24. The Buffalo Bills managed to overtake the previously high-ranked Arizona Cardinals, 19-16. It was a weekend of crazy games.

Did the Jets Actually Win?

New York Jets vs. Indianapolis Colts, 35-9

We have all been watching the downward spiral that has been the Jets’ season but here is a glimmer of light. The Colts coming off a victorious win over the Green Bay Packers were taken down by the Jets. I think the chants of Tebow at last weeks game finally got to Jets’ quarterback Mark Sanchez. Sanchez ended the night with 11 of 18 passes complete for 82 yards and two touchdowns. Colts’ quarterback Andrew Luck didn’t have such a stellar game he was 22 of 44 for 280 yards but he had two interceptions, a fumble, and lot of misfired balls. But the real star of the game was Jets’ Shonn Greene who ran for 161 yards, had three touchdowns on 32 carries. But Jets fans shouldn’t celebrate yet because next week they will face the New England Patriots and it’s not going to be pretty.

Everyone Hates Michael Vick . . . Again

Philadelphia Eagles vs. Detroit Lions, 26-23

I don’t think anyone saw this coming even Lions fans were surprised. The Eagles looked posed to win the game being up by 10 in the fourth. But then everything switched the Eagles gave up 250 yards and 17 points to the Lions. Quarterback Matt Stafford must have senses this was his chance because he threw a touchdown pass and ran for a score to push the game into overtime. Stafford ended the game with 22 of 45 for 311 yards. Which actually is the same number of yards Eagle’s quarterback Michael Vick had with a completion of 28 of 46 passes. Vick did a little better having an extra touchdown over Stafford. But fans are not happy with Vick. And you can’t blame them seeing as how they have 17 turnovers in 6 games and 13 of them came directly from Vick.  So this may signal it’s time for a change in the quarterback department.

Is That Big of A Spread Even Possible?

New York Giants vs. San Francisco 49ers, 26-3

As a Giants fan I am incredibly happy to see them take down the 49ers but I can’t say I saw it coming. I thought the Giants weak defensive would leave a lot of room for the 49ers to score. And despite some rough patches like losing to the Vikings, the 49ers were considered the top team in the NFL. So this big of gap is shocking. The most shocking thing was how effective the Giants’ defensive was against quarterback Alex SmithSmith had three interceptions and ended the night 19 of 30 for 200 yards. It was not a pretty game for Smith and he looked very out of sorts. Meanwhile on the Giants side there was salsa dancing from Victor Cruz, they even played in slow motion. And of course yelling from coach Tom Coughlin even when the Giants were winning by 20 points.

So Are the Seahawks Considered Good Now?

Seattle Seahawks vs. New England Patriots, 24-23

Is is hard to know how to feel about the Seattle Seahawks and their legion of boom defense. On one hand you have to respect what they have done on the other you can’t help to forget the bad call that gave them a win over the Green Bay Packers. But it wasn’t the great defense that won the game for the Seahawks. It was actually rookie quarterback Russell Wilson whose passed the ball to Sidney Rice with 1:18 remaining for a 46-yard touchdown and the win. It was the best game yet for Wilson who finished 16 of 27 for 293 yards. While Wilson was having a great game the Seahawks defense was not giving up 475 yards, the most this season. But you can’t blame the legion of boom for lacking against one of the best offensives in the NFL led by Tom Brady. Brady finished 36 of 58 for 395 yards. If anything it proved the Patriots are going to need a stronger defense if they want to see the Super Bowl again.

College Football Rundown Week 6: Top Teams Go Down

8 Oct

It was another interesting week in college football. Let’s take a look at the most interesting games.

NC State vs. Florida State(3), 17-16

All I can say is WOW. As a North Carolina native I couldn’t be happier to see NC State rising up. It looked like in the first half that Florida State had this in the bag. But then at the very last moment, literally with 16 seconds on the clock, NC State’s quarterback Mike Glennon passed the ball to wide receiver Bryan Underwood for a 2-yard touchdown on the fourth down.  It’s leading a lot of people to question whether Florida State should have been ranked that highly in the first place?

It seems pretty obvious that the major problem with Florida State is in the coaching department. Coach Jimbo Fisher made the decision not to attempt a 51-yard field goal instead opting to punted the ball. If Florida had made the field goal they would have had a 9 point lead in the game instead they found themselves losing.

Louisiana State University(4) vs. Florida, 14-6

Most people’s money was on LSU winning this match-up. No one saw Florida quarterback Mike Gillislee coming. Gillislee ran for a career-high 146 yards and two touchdowns. This is the third game where Gillislee has run more than 100 yards. Florida came from being behind 6-0 after the first half to win. The physicality of Florida is what sealed the deal. It was a little unclear if Florida was so amazing or LSU was just that bad? There were a lot of fumbles, interceptions and drops on the LSU side. Time will if the Gators deserve a bump in the polls.

Duke University vs. Virginia, 42-17

It is pretty shocking to be actually talking about Duke football. When you want Duke tickets you usually can find football tickets because their team is notorious for sucking. What is even more shocking as Duke being good is that they did it without their starting quarterback, Sean Renfree, who is out with an injured elbow. Taking his place was Anthony Boone who in his first time starting threw 4 touchdowns. Who knows maybe Duke will become a football powerhouse but for now you can settle for them no longer being the butt of the joke.

Now the Jets Really Suck

3 Oct

Things already looked pretty bad for New York Jets after losing star cornerback Darrelle Revis to a torn ACL during the game against the Miami Dolphins a week ago. But now they have gotten even worse. Wide receiver Santonio Holmes who was injured during their game last Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers is going to be out for the season. Holmes injured his left foot. The irony being that both these guys where not injured through contact but just all by their lonesome selves. I would say, “Could things get any worse,” but I actually don’t think they can. The Jets had a scoreless game against the 49ers.

To add wood to the fire 49ers cornerback, Carlos Rogers, went on Sirius XM Radio on Tuesday night and said, “It kinda seemed like, after a while they just, I know, looking at their defense, they didn’t want to be out there. And after that it’s like, man, these guys don’t really want to play the game. You know, it’s pretty much over.”

In response Jets’ coach Rex Ryan said they didn’t quit they were just exhausted. I can see how losing like that might make players a hopeless and apathetic. It points to a bigger problem that the Jets are lacking confidence. I think when a team becomes lackluster  their is only one thing you can do . . . start Tim Tebow. It is clear that Tebow is not going to solve the problem of losing Revis and Holmes but he may give the rest of the team a boost of energy. And if Tebow, which is likely, at least it will quiet the fans from chanting his name.

Roy Williams Has Serious Surgery

19 Sep

If you read our site regularly than you know that I am an extreme Duke fan. But even I can’t help but to hope for a speedy recovery for University of North Carolina’s basketball coach Roy Williams. I can tell you from seeing Williams in person in NC that he is the nicest man ever off the court. Williams underwent surgery today to remove a tumor from his right kidney. They found the tumor during a routine physical earlier this month(this is why you should visit the doctor). He might have to have surgery on his left kidney to remove another tumor. He is 62 years old.

I hope that he has recovers in time for basketball season in October. It wouldn’t be as fun to beat UNC without him.

Week 2 Football Rundown: Winners Become Losers

18 Sep

What a week it was in professional football. The teams that looked good in Week 1 didn’t look so hot in Week 2. And in some cases order was returned to the NFL universe. The San Francisco 49ers proved they will be the team to beat this week with a second win in a row against the Detroit Lions. The New Orleans Saints continued to suck losing to the North Carolina Panthers. The Chicago Bears also continued to suck which is unacceptable to their quarterback Jay Cutler who doesn’t know how to control his anger. Oh yeah and the New York Jets sucked again to losing to the Pittsburgh Steelers so watch your back Mark Sanchez the Tebow train is reviving up. And here is what happened with everyone else:

Peyton Manning is Human . . . Who Knew?

Denver Broncos vs. Atlanta Falcons, 27-21

I think we all should have seen this coming Manning is with a whole new team and it’s going to take time to adjust. Coming off a winning debut against the Pittsburgh Steelers, it looked like the Broncos were headed for victory. But Manning had a less than stellar game against the Falcons. In the first quarter alone Manning threw three interceptions which he hasn’t done since 2007. Manning completed 24 of 37 for 241 yards, had one touchdown and a 58.5 passer rating. Compared to Falcons’ quarterback Matt Ryan, Manning doesn’t look so hot. Ryan threw the 100th touchdown pass of his career during the match-up. Not only that but Ryan completed 24 of 36 for 219 yards, had two touchdowns, and a 101.5 passer rating. So there you have it Manning was schooled by Ryan.

The Super Bowl Champs Bounce Back But Not Until the 4th

Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. New York Giants, 41-34

I am beginning to think there is some unspoken law that only one Manning is allowed to win per week. This week it was Eli Manning’s turn as he lead the Giants to a win over the Buccaneers. Despite also throwing three interceptions(like his bro in Denver) Manning managed to bounce back in the 4th. Manning finished with 31 of 51 completed passes for 510 yards and three touchdowns. This was the 24th time in Manning’s career that he has come back in the 4th quarter. And it also appears the be the Giants’ strategy this season because of yet there seems to be no running game and a very weak offense.

Out of desperation the Buccaneers decided to attack Manning as he was kneeling for the snap in the final play. This greatly angered already angry looking, Giants coach Tom Coughlin, who attacked Buccaneers first-year coach Greg Schiano for the play after the game. This lead to a debate among football scholars as to whether the play was legal. Right now it’s looking like it was legal but not in good spirits.

The Cowboys Return to Normality

College Football Week 2: A Few Pieces of Glitter on a White Wall

9 Sep

There is so much football happening that it is hard to know where to begin. So I’ll just start. I’m only going through the most news worthy games.

UCLA vs. Nebraska, 36-30

This is shocking because UCLA hasn’t even been ranked since 2007. Since upsetting No. 17 Nebraska, UCLA has earned a spot at No. 22 on the AP list. For UCLA quarterback Brett Hundley passed for 305 yards and four touchdowns in his first home game. The game was tied 24-24 after the first half but UCLA’s defense came back strong allowing just 106 yards after halftime. So this could be change in the fortune of UCLA.

Arkansas vs. Louisiana-Monroe, 34-31

So we all knew this was going to be a rough season for Arkansas after losing coach Bobby Petrino after his extra material motorcycle affair. But I don’t think anyone predicted it would be this bad. Saturday night Arkansas managed to blow a 21-point lead in the second half to loose in overtime. Part of LM success came from their quarterback Kolton Browning who had 481 yards and four touchdowns. Not only that but Arkansas lost their quarterback Tyler Wilson during the game to what is being called an “above the shoulder” injury. And it it unlikely he will be returning next week for their match against Alabama. Now Arkansas has fallen in most polls from the top 10 to more than 20.

USC vs. Syracuse, 42-29

The game almost didn’t finish because of delays due to lightning and looming thunderstorms. There was a delay after the first half for over an hour, which was tough a new thing for the Southern California players. The rest actually helped USC resurge in the second half. USC’s quarterback Matt Barkley matched his own school record with six touchdown passes and threw for only 187 yards. The big mistake for Syracuse was the decision to punt the ball in the 4th quarter. Syracuse was at the 49th-line and decided to punt the ball. The ball ended up in USC wide receiver Robert Woods hands who took it back to the 4 yard line and set up a touchdown which pretty much ended the game for Syracuse.

Alabama vs. Western Kentucky 35-0

Alabama is still ranked number one and had no trouble defeating Western Kentucky. Alabama’s quarterback racked up some good numbers easily. AJ McCarron completed 14-of-19 passes for 218 yards and had 4 touchdowns. Western Kentucky fumbled away any chance they could have had to score in this game.

College Football Weekend Rundown

2 Sep

The time of year is upon where mid-day drinking out of the back of pick-up truck is no longer just a red neck thing to do, it’s a point of college pride. Yes college football season has begun. If you didn’t watch all the games here is what you missed:

Ohio State vs. Miami (Ohio), 56-10

After the first quarter when Ohio trailed Miami this game got much less interesting. Ohio has a new coach Urban Meyer, previously coached the Florida Gators to two National Championship victories, got off to a good start. Ohio quarterback Braxton Miller had  350 yards and led  three straight second-quarter touchdown drives.

Ohio University vs. Penn State, 24-14

Poor Penn State as if things couldn’t get any worse for them. It was looking up for Penn State who lead by 11 at halftime. But slowly that lead was chipped away by Ohio quarterback Tyler Tettleton who had three touchdowns in the second half. Penn State hasn’t lost an opening game since 2001. Penn’s new coach Bill O’Brien told everyone it was his coaching that was lacking, although I’m not sure anyone really blames him.

Alabama vs. Michigan, 41-14

I can tell you one person who is crying over Michigan’s loss. Boxer Floyd Mayweather bet $2.9 million on Michigan winning in Vegas. Everyone is hoping that Mayweather will go broke so he will have to face Manny Pacquaio. But it’s going to take a lot of betting to make that happen. Mayweather got $32 million for his last fight. I’m not sure why Mayweather beat that number 8 ranked Michigan would take down number 2 Alabama. Despite losing Mark Ingram and Trent Richardson on offense Alabama seemed to do just fine. It was a crushing loss for Michigan who only had 269 yards while Alabama finished with 431 yards. Maybe Michigan should get new uniforms to start because they are really not working on so many levels.

Univ. of Southern California vs. Hawaii, 49-10

This was just a sad match up. USC sacked Hawaii’s quarterback Sean Schroeder five times. USC’s quarterback Matt Barkley passed for 372 yards and four touchdowns. It was a strong start for the number 1 ranked USC.

Ryan Tannehill or Matt Moore: Who Sucks Less?

20 Aug

If you caught any of the pre-season match-up between the Miami Dolphins and the Carolina Panthers you know that the Dolphins were struggling. The Dolphins lost the game 23-17. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill, 8th overall draft pick, started the game off. Tannehill was 11 of 23 passes for 100 yards. He was also sacked(tackled before he could throw a pass) three times and had four passes deflected(the ball was caught by the other team). Compared to Panther’s quarterback Cam Newton who made 8 of 11 passes for 119 yards and had a touchdown, Tannehill didn’t look good.

But at least Tannehill looked better than veteran QB Matt Moore. Moore played against reserve players and completed only 5 of 15 passes for 57 yards. For the Dolphins it is really a question of who sucked less and the answer is Tannehill. The team is expected to announce within the week which QB will be their starter. The regular football season starts in three short weeks. And the Dolphins have a lot of work to do. They had no blocking from the offensive line which is really their primary job. The Dolphins had no running game which is probably because their offensive line is not blocking. So needless to say Tannehill is going to have a heavy burden if he is named QB.

It Was Funny at the Time?

19 Aug

I think we have all experienced this in our lives. You decide to pull a stupid prank on a friend. And at the time it is hilarious . . . I mean who doesn’t think drawing a penis in permanent marker on someone’s face while they sleep isn’t funny? But this was long before the days of video phones and Twitter. Now pranks that maybe weren’t that bad look really bad during the replay. That is exactly the situation that the Giants’ defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is facing. He decided with the help of other teammates to carry cornerback Prince Amukamara through the locker room and toss him into a cold tub. Because they thought it was so funny punter Steve Weatherford posted a video to Twitter.

Apparently not everyone else was laughing. In fact a lot of people were really disturbed by the video. During the entire thing Amukamara looks very uncomfortable. You can’t blame the guy he just got paraded around on some other dudes backs and thrown into cold water. Just like when you are a kid and mom got involved, coach Tom Coughlin is now having to figure out some sort of punishment. How do you punish a bad football player? I don’t know but I think it involves sprints.

Red Sox Lose Icon: Johnny Pesky dies at 92

14 Aug

Johnny Pesky played with the Boston Red Sox during his ten year baseball career. His baseball career last more than 60 years with the Red Sox where he managed, served, was a broadcaster as well as being a player. He died on Monday at the age of 92. The right field foul pole at Fenway will forever be called the “Pesky Pole” for the time that Pesky hit a home run that went around the pole. Even at the age of 92 he managed to make it out for the 100th birthday of Fenway Park where he was wheeled out to second base. And luckily the last Red Sox game he saw was a winning one.
