Update: Phelps Get 19th Medal

31 Jul

Okay so just as I was writing about Michael Phelps getting his 18th medal and tying the record. Now he has the most medals in Olympic history with 19 medals.  The US took home the gold medal in the 4×200 relay. Phelps was the anchor of the team. The team included Ryan Lochte, Conor Dwyer, Ricky Berens, and Phelps. They won with a time of 6 minutes, 59.70 seconds. Behind them was France with 7:02.77 and China in third with 7:06:30.  That means Lochte now has two gold medals!!!! And we finally beat France.

Spoiler Alert: Team USA Women’s Gymnastics Takes Gold

31 Jul

Is it just me or is trying to navigate the Olympics schedule on NBC the most confusing thing ever. I think I have more chance of understanding chess than finding out when events are showing on the numerous NBC channels. Not to mention figuring out the time difference and when NBC is actually going to air it. It’s made even more confusing since NBC keeps lying about everything being live. But shhh don’t complain or they will take away your Twitter account. No really they will. Regardless the you can watch the USA Women’s Gymnastics team take home gold tonight.

This is the first gold medal for the US Women’s team all-round since 1996. The American finished with a score of 183.596 points, Russia was behind them with 178.530, and Romania took bronze with 176.414. Jordyn Wieber redeemed herself after not placing in the individual all-round. It still won’t help her with the sponsorship and fame she craves but at least she has a medal now. Gabby Douglas rocked the vault. So yeah you can see all of this tonight.

Phelps Ties Record

31 Jul

Michael Phelps has tied the record for most medals with his 18th medal win Tuesday night(yes London is ahead of us). He just barely missed the gold medal in 200-meter butterfly. At the last minute Phelps was out touched by Chad le Clos of South Africa. Clos came in with a time of 1:52:96 and Phelps had 1:53:01. So he’s got 18 medals but the media is bummed that it wasn’t gold. Despite it being a silver media, his second of the games including the relay, I think he should be proud.

Winning 18 medals is not an easy task and the media should respect that. So let’s focus on the positive.

I Wouldn’t Complain

31 Jul

Speaking of US Gymnastics a recent scandal has broken out over gymnast Danell Leyva sending nude photographs to men women. Some girl came forward with a bunch of very provocative photos of Leyva on her phone. Apparently he has exchanged photos with multiple women. I personally can’t believe that this woman is complaining. If Leyva wants to send me some hot photos of himself, I would take it as a gift. I mean seriously how could you complain about seeing that man naked? As we speak I am making one of these photos the background on my computer.

And the worse part is this women is asking for nothing in return to release the photos. She is claiming she will also release nude photos too. I’m not sure I get her motive . . . we already know he’s hot.

I Can’t Watch John Orozco Cry

31 Jul

The US Men’s Gymnastics team fell short and failed to medal in the team finals. The US finished fourth behind China, Japan and Great Britain. It was a shocking result for what some considered the Dream Team of gymnastics who had qualified in first place for the events. It just took three falls for them to disappear from the medal podium. First it was Sam Mikulak who was really close to a perfect floor routine but he fell and his score was dropped to 14.6. Then Danella Leyva fell on the pommel horse and had to restart which hurt his score. And the nail in the coffin was added by John Orozco who fell on the pommel horse and was given a 12.73 by the judges. Damn pommel horse.

Poor Orozco felt it was his fault but losing was really a team effort in this case. It was going to be hard for them to come back from such low scores to start on the floor. Watching Orozco, who came from the most unlikely gymnastics background, cry was unbearable. I literally could watch it without tearing up. It was like watching a kid who just learned Santa wasn’t real, way too painful.

Luckily there are still individual competitions coming up.

A Break From the Olympics

30 Jul

We have all been distracted by the Olympics and we forgot about our normal media sensations like Tim Tebow. But while we were drooling over the hot Olympic bodies Tebow has been training with the Jets. He has been through a rigorous training program that includes running shirtless in the rain. I can say with confidence after watching this video several times(more times than I should probably admit) Tebow could definitely have a career in male stripping.

Call Me Lochte . . . No Really Call Me

30 Jul

If anything can make Ryan Lochte laugh right now, it’s this video. I hope he takes it as motivation.

Don’t Worry Lochte We Still Love You

30 Jul

It’s been downhill for Ryan Lochte ever since his first gold medal win. First it was choking as the anchor of 400-meter freestyle relay. Lochte apparently got a little to excited a wore himself out by getting an early lead only to loose it in the end to Frenchman Yannick Agnel. Giving the Americans the silver medal behind France. Michael Phelps on the other hand proved why he was amazing by gaining a lead during his leg of the relay.

If that loss weren’t enough now Lochte has failed to medal 200-meter freestyle finishing fourth on Monday. He was beaten again by Frenchman Agnel who took home the gold. There is nothing worse than being beaten by the French, I’m mean isn’t it enough that they think they are better than us and now they are proving it. Despite this loss I still believe Lochte will win gold in the 200-meter individual medley and 200-meter backstroke. True Lochte fans never give up hope.

Poor Jordyn Wieber

29 Jul

I think it is easy to forget how much pressure Olympic athletes are under. The story of 17 year-old Jordyn Wieber is the perfect example of this. She came in as an Olympic favorite and the new face of USA gymnastics. Wieber is the reigning all-around world champion and was expected to easily move onto the Olympic all-around finals. But alas she failed to get a high enough score to move on. In fact it was the lowest score she had ever gotten.  And she was beaten by her BFF and roommate Aly Raisman. Raisman came in first with a score of 60.391 points, right behind her was Gabby Douglas with 0.126 less, and lastly Wieber scored  0.359 points behind. It is crazy when you think she just lost out by 0.359 points. But there can only be two finalist from each country.

Now she must pull it together to participate for team gold. Losses like this are truly devastating to athletes who depend on winning to make money from sponsors. Just look at Michael Phelps. Subway wouldn’t want to be in business with him if he were the second place finisher.

Shocker: USA beats France in Basketball

29 Jul

For those of you up early enough to watch Team USA kick Tony Parker’s France’s ass in basketball, it was an okay game. USA won the game, 98-71. France was seen a more viable competitor because of Tony Parker’s presence but alas it wasn’t enough to move past the Dream Team Status Quo Team. In his first appearance at the Olympics Kevin Durant was the star. Durant scored 22 points and had 9 rebounds. Despite the star power it was a clumsy game with 14 turnovers and 26 fouls. Team USA has one big advantage- the best bench ever. When your bench players are Anthony Davis you know you are in a good place.

Durant was definitely more motivated since his loss with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals. LeBron James finished the game with 9 points, 8 assists, and 4 rebounds. Although James’ stats don’t sound amazing . . . he did only play for 24 minutes.

France was lucky to even have Parker who almost missed the game after the Chris Brown glass in the eye incident. To protect his eyes Parker was forced to sport some nerd chic goggles. Parker not only had to go through eye surgery but also was confined to a hotel room for a week so that probably affected his game.

The highlight of the game for some was the hug and pat on the back from First Lady Michelle Obama. The next game Team USA plays is against Tunisia(it’s in the northern part of Africa) on Tuesday.
