Oh Duke . . . I Miss You Already

16 Mar

Just as I was getting over Norfolk beating Missouri, Duke lost to Lehigh. The reason you don’t know Norfolk or Lehigh is because THIS IS THEIR FIRST NCAA TOURNAMENT. They are also both 15th seeded so you probably didn’t bother to learn about them before bracketing right past them. Why would you include them in your thoughts since it has been more than 10 years since a 15th seed has beat a 2 seed. Now it has happened twice in one day.

As a Duke fan I can admit our team was not that strong this year but I had hopes that it would come back. I can only think what if Ryan Kelly had played maybe things would have been different. But Duke gave too many points on the back court and didn’t block nearly enough shots.

Now we are all faced with updating our brackets incorporating in these wild cards. I think that Norfolk will have enough steam to make it past Florida. I think maybe Lehigh(I am saying their name in sarcastic mocking tone) will advance past Notre Dame Xavier but it is highly unlikely that will take down Baylor(or Colorado).

We’re Smart Jocks

There has been a concerted effort this year at the NCAA Tournament to prove that NCAA athletes are not just skating by on their athletic abilities. You have probably seen the PSAs explaining that athletes do better on test and get better grades. Also the announcers have been explaining some of the complicated majors of certain players like industrial engineering, which one announcer thought was particularly complicated. To the NCAA- thank you obvious message but maybe you should try to deal with players like Fab Melo before it screws everyone’s brackets and your reputation.

Congrats Norfolk! You Just Screwed Everyone’s Brackets

If you didn’t just watch the game between Norfolk State(15) against Missouri (2) then you missed an amazing game. Although I am happy for underdog Norfolk State (which is in Virginia, yeah no one knew that) they just completely screwed-up everyone’s brackets. I am not even sure that Norfolk State fans would have picked them to beat Missouri. This is only the 5th time in history a 15th seed has over come a number 2 seed. This is the first appearance for Norfolk State in a NCAA Tournament. It was a battle until the last second ending 86-84. The worst part is that Norfolk State even missed foul shots at the end and still won.

Norfolk State’s Kyle O’Quinn played amazing with 26 points and 14 rebounds. I smell some O’Quinnsanity coming on. Now they will face Florida(7). I’m adjusting my bracket and putting Norfolk beating Florida.

Peyton Just Pick Already

16 Mar

It’s a crazy ride watching the news of Peyton Manning non-team decision. The Cardinals are officially out since they paid for QB Kevin Kolb. Rumor has it Manning told the Miami Dolphins no so they are free to purse QB Matt Flynn. Now it is down to the Denver Broncos, Tennessee Titans, or long shot San Francisco 49ers. I can’t help but to feel bad for 49er’s QB Alex Smith and Bronco’s QB Tim Tebow who are waiting on Manning’s decision. I think it hard for anyone to feel like a second choice for their own team.

Manning’s best options of getting back to the Super Bowl is with the 49ers. But it might be hard for Manning to turn to the reported $90 million over 5-years. Regardless Manning needs to make a decision soon before everyone starts to hate him.

No Peyton for the Cardinals

16 Mar

The Arizona Cardinals are paying QB Kevin Kolb a $7 million roster bonus which means there is no money room for Peyton Manning. The question is how much was Manning really considering the Cardinals? Was it just a ploy to up his asking price? I personally think Manning had enough interest that he didn’t need the Cardinals to make him look more expensive valuable. The Cardinals however may have really need Manning. Kolb has a lot of growing room before he becomes a real threat. Not only that but this $7 million is just for him to compete to be a starter against QB John Skelton at training camp.  It also doesn’t make much since to pay someone $7 million to compete to be the starting QB? So if he’s not a starter then what did the Cardinals just pay $7 million for exactly?
